I was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview Kevin McKernan, a liberty loving scientist who is an expert in the field of genomics. Kevin’s company, Medicinal Genomics, was the first to sequence the Cannabis indica and sativa genomes. Prior to that, he managed R&D for the Human Genome Project at Whitehead Institute/MIT, was president and CSO of Agencourt Personal Genomics, which dramatically reduced the cost and speed of sequencing a human genome from about $300M to $3000, and was Vice President and Director of R&D at Life Technologies, where he managed development of next generation SOLiD sequencing technology. He is currently CSO at Courtagen,which offers genomic and proteomic testing services with a focus on diagnostics of mitochondrial diseases, including full sequencing of patients’ mitochondrial genomes.

I had a great time last night on Anarchy Gumbo, a new podcast hosted by Michael W. Dean of Freedom Feens fame. It’s structured as a conversation rather than an interview, and I liked the informal style, as you can probably tell if you listen – I definitely let loose a little more than normal. The chemistry was great, probably in part because we were talking over the low-latency, secure program Mumble. And since we recorded it as a “double ender,” the audio quality is stellar. (Hint: if you don’t know what a “double ender” is… then you’ll just have to listen to find out. ;-))
